Graduate Program

Accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM), Texas State University's School of Music offers graduate work leading to the Master of Music degree.

The Master of Music-Music Education and Master of Music-Music are both 36-hour programs with a core of 12 semester hours, a major area of 12 semester hours, and an additional 12 semester hours of electives related to the major area. Also offered are opportunities for independent studies with professors in their areas of specialization.

NOTE:    Students who reach less than 70% on the music theory placement test will take MU5357 Graduate Music Theory and Musicianship in addition to the degree requirements listed below.

NOTE: Students who do not achieve 70% on the music theory placement test will be required to take MU5357 Graduate
Music Theory and Musicianship in addition to the degree requirements listed below. A Music Education Entrance Exam is required.

    Music Education Elective (3 credits):
        • [3 x] MU 5136 Special Topic Workshops (each is a 1-week-long workshop)
        • MU5355 Pedagogy of Music Theory
        • MU 5365 Computing in Music
    Techniques Electives (6 credits):
        • MU 5322 Instrumental Techniques and Materials (for Instrumental Music emphasis)
        • MU 5323 Vocal Music Education Methods (for Choral Music emphasis)
        • Independent Study MU 5317 or MU 5313 (for General Music Emphasis)
        • MU 5326 Research in Music Education II (with Final Music Education Project)

NOTE: The Final Music Education Project is usually part of the Music Ed
Research II course. If this course is not taken as part of this elective, the Final
Music Education Project must be completed as part of one other course taken by
the student – to be approved by the music education faculty.
