Karla Hamelin
Karla Hamelin, accomplished cellist and avid chamber musician, has worked with numerous artists in other disciplines, including dancers, choreographers, visual artists, poets and actors as well as studio musicians. Her ability to play a broad and diverse spectrum of repertoire has made her a sought-after performer of new works, orchestral and chamber music, and a featured artist in a baroque cantata series. An advocate of new music, Dr. Hamelin has performed with contemporary ensembles such as the American Repertory Ensemble and Audio Inversions. Involved in several commissions and premieres, she has worked with notable living composers, including Jennifer Higdon, John Adams, Donald Grantham, Joan Tower, Joseph Turrin, Donald Crockett, Diana McIntosh and Jake Heggie.
Participating in music festivals in Graz, Austria, Banff, Aspen, and elsewhere, Karla Hamelin holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in cello performance from The University of Texas at Austin. While a doctoral student at UT, she was teaching assistant to Professor Phyllis Young and taught in their String Project. Before pursuing her doctorate, Karla earned a Master of Music degree in cello performance from The University of Michigan under the tutelage of Anthony Elliott. Equally dedicated to performing and teaching, Dr. Hamelin has taught at the Austin Chamber Music Center, Concordia University and Texas Lutheran University. She was recently appointed as an adjudicator for the Royal Conservatory of Music in Canada.
