The Voice Area is committed to bringing each student to his or her highest individual potential through a positive learning atmosphere and high academic standards, supporting and training every student toward a career in singing and the musical arts. The department has a distinguished history of success in preparing singers and educators for the professional world.

Success Story

Texas State students have consistently won major regional and national competitions, including those of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS), Edward Baird Singer of the Year, and competitions such as the Meistersinger Competition (AIMS Graz), Lois Alba, MacAllister, and Vargas.

Instruction

The Voice Area offers one of the most comprehensive curricula to be found anywhere. In all vocal instruction offered in the department, emphasis is placed on achieving a solid foundation in the standard technical challenges of professional performance, regardless of major.  Voice students engage in a series of master classes, vocal literature courses, and departmental offerings that thoroughly and appropriately develop their technical expertise and knowledge of repertoire. Also included in the curriculum is a firm emphasis on vocal pedagogy, acoustics, and acute awareness of vocal health.

Every Texas State Voice Performance, Vocal Music Education, BA in Voice, and SRT with Vocal Emphasis student receives instruction directly from one of our world class faculty for the duration of their study at Texas State. Each studio offers a year-long, team-taught seminar in order to prepare singers for the realities of a career devoted to singing and/or teaching.  Students will take at least four semesters of private lessons and at the end of their sophomore year must pass an Upper Level Competency Review exam on the skills learned in order to proceed to upperclassmen study.

The art of teaching is as important in the voice area as the art of performing.  All members of the voice faculty are committed to training outstanding choral directors, voice teachers, and musical professionals in every musical arena.  The education program in voice requires the same vocal strengths as entry to the performance program, emphasizing a belief in the importance of music all well-educated teachers and mentors for the younger generation in our country's public and private schools.
