Description:
Claude Debussy – L’enfant prodigue (1884)
A cantata in one act, L’enfant prodigue (The Prodigal Son) tells the biblical story of a wayward son, Azaël, who leaves home and returns years later in remorse. His mother, Lia, mourns his absence, while his father, Siméon, initially hesitates to forgive him. However, in the end, the family reunites in an emotional resolution.

Maurice Ravel – L’enfant et les sortilèges (1925)
A fantastical opera in one act, L’enfant et les sortilèges (The Child and the Enchantments) follows a mischievous child who, after throwing a tantrum, finds that inanimate objects and animals come to life to scold him. Teapots, clocks, chairs, and garden creatures take revenge, teaching the child a lesson in kindness and empathy.

Check out the state-of-the-art Performing Arts Center, which was opened in the Fall of 2014.  An expansive facility, this is where we do our opera productions, scenes productions, and student recitals.

Designed by the architectural firm of Morris Architects, the 69,122-square-foot facility features two professional-quality performance venues — the Patti Strickel Harrison Theatre that seats 397 patrons and the Recital Hall that seats 312 patrons.  With instructional space, as well as design and production spaces, the Performing Arts Center is well equipped to meet the educational and artistic production needs of our academic units as it serves the broader San Marcos community
