San Marcos — The Hansel & Gretel Opera, the popular 19th Century classic adapted by composer Engelbert Humperdinck, is an event “unlike any you’ve ever seen,” says Texas State conductor and opera studies director Dr. Sam Mungo.

Three performances by the Texas State Opera Theatre are scheduled at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, March 30 and 31 and at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 1.

The storyline is relatively unchanged from the original tale by The Brothers Grimm. However, the element of opera brings the story something exciting and new.

“Many people view opera as nothing but seven hundred pound women in breastplates,” Mungo said. “The music in this opera should be listener-friendly to just about anyone.”

This event is important to the University community and San Marcos because it helps to carry on a “folklore” tradition that has been around for centuries, he added.
